Foundations: Early Croatian Immigration to New Zealand
Andrew D. Trlin
Paperback, 320pp
Foundations is a revision and expansion of Andrew Trlin’s classic Now Respected, Once Despised written in 1979, the first comprehensive study of Yugoslav immigration to New Zealand. Yugoslavia has since disappeared from the map and much other information has become available to authors. Andrew made the decision to comprehensively re-write the earlier work, focusing on Croatian immigration. He completed his research for the book and was progressing well with the new writing when diagnosed with terminal cancer early in 2013. This forced him to reduce the scope of the work and so the Chapters in the original on Winemakers, Assimilation and Town and City have not been rewritten or included in Foundations. However the remainder of Now Respected, Once Despised has been rewritten as Andrew had intended with an appropriate Conclusion.
