Opuzen Press
Opuzen Press was founded by Des Mataga to publish the results of his research into the history of his ancestors’ immigration to New Zealand, firstly his father’s arrival as a gumdigger in 1903, then his mother’s forbears as flax-traders and timber-millers in the early 19th century. Each strand was part of broader historical events whose stories Des felt had not been properly told, such as the impact of the spread of the vine disease Phylloxera down the coast of Dalmatia on large scale migration from the region or the opening of relations between Maori and Pakeha whalers and timber and flax traders the length of the country in the 1820s. He has also published works by other authors in those areas whose research he drew on, but who passed away leaving unpublished manuscripts.
